Christmas Light Safety

11/18/2016

Christmas is almost here! Soon it will seem like everyone you know is shopping for gifts, planning parties, and DECORATING. Well, it's also that time of year for gentle reminders about holiday decorating safety. Even if you feel pressed for time, go through these simple safety steps to ensure everything goes smoothly.

   1. Start with the correct  equipment.
  • Ensure you are using indoor/outdoor lights inside and only outdoor rated lights outside. Read the package when you buy them, or if in doubt check the UL tag (if UL writing is green it is for indoor use, if UL writing is in red it is for outdoor use). If the tag is not present on the light string anymore DO NOT take the chance, restrict it for indoor use only.
  • Do not exceed the maximum number of strings that can be connected (general rule is 3, but read your directions also). Make sure you run enough extension cords to properly power all light strings.
  • Make sure the demand (pull) from the lights is matched or exceeded by the amperage supplied by the extension cord. Don't exceed the recommendations!
  • Make sure you have all outdoor lights plugged into GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets. Even if you are using outdoor approved equipment water or debris can possibly penetrate the lights or junctions. If you do not have GFCI outlets outside you can purchase portable outdoor GFCIs that are easily installed.

  2. Safety checks:
  • Make sure you inspect all equipment before installation, even new purchases. Be on the lookout for frayed cord ends, cracked insulation/jacketing, or broken light bulbs. If it is an easy fix like replacing a bulb, take the time to do it now. If a cord end is frayed, only replace the end if you know how to do it correctly; if you don't know how, ask for help from someone who does and set it aside in the meantime.
  • If there is any doubt about the safety, don't use it! Replace cords and light strings when necessary.

  3. Ensuring safety after installation:
  • Keep cord ends out of water and snow (I know, DUH, but it happens). Elevate ends and junctions with bricks, rocks, or anything available. These can also be wrapped in plastic for another level of protection.
  • Keep all potential hazards away from small children and pets (I know, another DUH, but accidents happen in a heartbeat!)
  • Ensure that cords are not a trip hazard. Take the extra step to move cords out of traffic areas and tape down to decrease the risk of someone tripping over it.
  • Turn off all lighting before leaving the house and when going to sleep.

  4. Consider LED lights:
  • Incandescent lights are brighter, but LEDs use less energy and emit less heat. LEDs also are covered with epoxy lenses in place of glass, making them more durable and less likely to break.

  5. Last but not least:
  • Remember to take down and properly store your lights and decorations. Even light strings that are labeled for outdoor use are only intended for temporary use. All decorations will deteriorate if left outside for long periods of time, compromising their safety (and yours!). Promptly remove decorations and store in a dry area, away from children and animals.

Please give us a call if you have any problems or questions - we truly care about your safety!

From the entire Davies family, have a wonderful and safe holiday season!
